The Kyzylkum reserve protects tugai woodland and sand desert in the lower Amu Darya on the southeastern edge of Khorezm. Inside are Bukhara deer, pheasant and poplar-tamarisk forest; walking is only allowed with a ranger and a permit obtained in advance. The riverbank is green in spring; summer reaches 45 degrees.
